Freeze the Moment

A single instant can tell an entire story…and the Express UUBar Ranch is a fabulous place to capture native wildlife ‘doing what they do’ within this famous 180,000 acre property.

In this great shot, our hobbyist photographer friend, Gary Sparks, caught two Antelope bucks chasing away a young coyote who was getting too close and too big for his britches. 

Gary suggests the following tips to capture one-of-a-kind moments with your camera (or, maybe more often in today’s culture, your smart phone using the camera app). 

• Fill the frame
  Zoom in to capture the action which dominates the image.
  

• Get focused
  If your camera has continuous focus (or servo mode), use it. This technology predicts where to focus each time the shutter opens.
  

• Motion matters
  You’re aiming to stimulate the viewer…so you want a subject whose position or environment convey that movement has been frozen.
  

• Increase your chances
  Raise the odds of a perfect photo by using continuous shooting, also called burst mode (this is what “frames per second” refers to). Good cameras with at least 6 fps are excellent for wildlife shots.
  

• Move your camera 
  Tracking your subject as it moves called panning, allows you to shoot at slower shutter speeds. Panning also helps manage the framing of a fast-moving object.
